I was really looking forward to this book out of the entire BLACK series. Why? I am glad you asked! I abhor, no, I HATE "Reality Television" and I was (im)patiently waiting to read Russell Blake's take on the subject. I was not disappointed!Black is so broke that he cannot pay Roxie, for the first time. Roxie has to take a job as a "Girl Friday" to an old woman in Beverly Hills who she refers to as the dragon lady. Black is applying for minimum wage security guard positions...
There is a reality show called "Rock of Ages." Last Call, almost won the competition the previous year and are returning to the show because of it. Bobby lays out a plan to get Black on the show -- getting paid five hundred dollars a week as the guitar player for Last Call.
Bobby has a confidential client who will pay "another couple of grand a week for the snooping” -- they "think something stinks about what happened last year." Wait until you finally find out who the confidential client is!
Black was once a guitar player and songwriter for ex-wife Nina's band. She screwed him out of everything during their divorce. She went on to become a diva worth gazillions. Nobody told Black she was going to be one of the judges...
Blake inadvertently gets stuck with bringing Mugsy on the "Rock of Ages" -- as a gimmick for the fans and to get higher ratings. The fat cat becomes the "star" of the show with his own line of merchandise.
Let the games begin! The storyline is a rocking good time with the usual twists and turns. It is an easy, enjoyable read that moves right along. Well done, Mr. Blake!

I am a big fan of the series. It was fun to imagine Mugsy getting the attention that Roxie has always said he deserved. Although I don't watch reality music shows, one would have to live under a rock to not appreciate the setting of this fourth book in the series.
This is number four of the series about a Cadillac driving, pompadour wearing, black clad private detective. His world is governed by Murphy's Law, an overweight cat and a researcher/receptionist who consistently reminds the hero that he is mortal, is inept, and has bad taste. I hate spoiler reviews so I'll only say that Blake's delivery is enticing and keeps your interest up while making you laugh. I hope there are more books to come in this series!
I have enjoyed all 4 books in this series. I read them all in a month. I am sorry there are no more. I can't wait until # 5 comes out. Black is a great character, in fact all the characters from Roxie, Mugsy, Stan etc are great. I read that Russell Blake has fun writing the Black books. I enjoy them, and find myself laughing out loud at times due to the sarcasm, and repartee between characters. Again can't wait for the next one.Books are very well plotted as well.
What a great read! This storyline reaches into Black's origin story, yet stays doesn't delve in flashbacks. This took a different direction than I was expecting and I enjoyed the blend of suspense, investigation and humor. If you haven't read this yet...you're missing out!
I don't know how Russell Blake does it, but his writing is superb! The"guy who done it" is always a surprise, and the twists and turns are amazing! What gets me is that no matter how bizarre a twist is, it always is plausible! My only gripe is this is the last BLACK book! He'd better get busy!!!
This is a good read. The constant humor between Roxie Stan and Black is entertaining and the plot is good. I enjoy Mr. Blake's books because they are suspenseful and are believeabke. Some books you read are impossible to believe. Characters take on super human strengths and mental powers and the plot is convoluted with impossible actions. Blake does a great job of making things realistic but yet still suspenseful and interesting.
Black to Reality is my favorite book in the Black series because Mugsy the cat is prominently featured. I always felt he was the real star, and in this book he becomes one on reality TV. I love how he kept getting all the attention when he did nothing more than eat and sleep and get fatter.
Like the other books in the series, I found myself laughing throughout. Dr. Kelso especially tickles my funny bone. And Stan turned into quite the badass this time. But the story isn’t just humorous. Behind the hilarity a lot of issues are addressed. Like the lengths a person will go to when down on their luck to survive, dealing with aging and broken dreams, and trying to understand and come to grips with complex emotions felt for different people.
As Black went through his ordeal, I found it easy to connect with him. I think everyone has been in some variation of his shoes at some point in their life. What he chose to do in the end proves how much his character has grown since the first book. He makes a tough but smart choice.
